Can you increase NAD+ levels naturally?

NAD+ is something we all have inside our bodies and it plays a very important role in keeping us alive and healthy. NAD+ has been proven to support a number of biological processes, including ageing, physical and mental performance, and immunity. However, as we age, our NAD+ levels naturally decline. By the time we reach 40, our levels of NAD+ will have depleted by around 50% and certain lifestyle factors can speed this decline up. So how do you keep your NAD+ levels at a consistent level and stop this decline? Well, there are actually a few different ways you can do this.

Ways to increase your NAD+ levels naturally

Exercise

It’s common knowledge that regular exercise is good for our mental and physical health but it’s also one of the easiest ways to enhance your NAD+ levels. This is because when we consistently exercise, our bodies require more NAD+ for energy, and the body responds by producing more of it. Daily workouts also force our muscles to produce more mitochondria which results in a natural lift in NAD+ levels.

Seek the heat - but avoid the sun

When our skin is exposed to direct sunlight, the body is forced to to use increased amounts of NAD+ to repair cell damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Whilst we do need some sunlight to produce vitamin D, you should limit the time you spend in the sun and take measures to protect your skin such as wearing sunscreen and covering skin with clothing. However, despite overexposure to the sun depleting NAD+ levels, spending time in natural or artificial heat can actually boost those levels. You can trigger an increased production of NAD+ levels by enjoying hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms.

Switch up your diet

Certain foods can help you boost NAD+ levels and these include cow’s milk, fish, mushrooms, yeast, green vegetables and whole grains. Additionally, raw foods that contain vitamin B, like avocados, steamed fish, and peanuts, should be part of your daily diet if you’re trying to increase your NAD+ levels. There are also some things you should try and eliminate or at least reduce in your diet such as alcohol. Long-term alcohol consumption disrupts metabolic processes in the body and reduces the efficacy of NAD+.

NAD+ boosting supplements

NAD+ supplements are by far the easiest and most effective way of boosting NAD+ levels in the body and they’re ideal if you’re not able to consistently exercise or you have specific dietary requirements that restrict how much NAD+ boosting foods you can eat.
